Springing into Action: Karen Joelson and Her Passion for Giving

Edgehill Resident Inspires Connection and Service Through Her Dedication to Others

Edgehill resident Karen Joelson work works with children at the Children's Learning Centers of Fairfield County.

Twenty-five years ago, Stamford resident Karen Joelson did not just imagine her future—she watched it take shape brick by brick. As Edgehill celebrated its 25th year recently, Karen reflects on the time she first visited our community before it was even completed, accompanying a friend exploring retirement options. As she stood on the site and learned about the concept, Karen was intrigued. “Lifecare—what a great idea,” she recalls thinking.

Several years later, Karen and her husband embraced the opportunity to join a continuing care retirement community promising freedom, social connections and personal growth.

Love and Loss, Supported by Community

After moving to Edgehill, Karen’s husband was diagnosed with dementia. With Karen focused on his care, being part of a supportive and compassionate community made all the difference.

“When he passed away, I was helped by the wonderful residents and associates,” Karen shares. The kindness and support she received reaffirmed her belief in the strength and compassion of Edgehill’s community.

Committed to Stamford and Beyond

Karen’s passion for giving back shines through her work at Edgehill, where she serves on the Resident Council, leads the Social Action Committee and advocates for her neighbors. A former educator, she continues to inspire through her volunteer work with the Children’s Learning Center of Fairfield County. She also participates in fundraising walks to support Stamford Health  and Alzheimer’s research, reflecting her lifelong commitment to the greater community. Karen’s compassion and sense of purpose drive her desire to make a positive impact.

Thriving Through Connection

For Karen, giving back is a source of joy and purpose. “It feels good to make a difference and it keeps us young,” she says. Her energy and optimism inspire others to connect and contribute, creating a ripple effect throughout the community.

A New Season of Living

As spring brings renewal, Edgehill celebrates life, connection and community. For Karen, it is a time to reflect on the friendships, shared experiences and support that have shaped her life at Edgehill and beyond.

“Karen is a force for good at Edgehill,” says Executive Director Christopher Cilano. “Her energy and compassion inspire us all to do more.”

Karen Joelson’s unwavering dedication to others continues to inspire and strengthen the bonds of community at Edgehill, making it a place where connection and compassion thrive.
